Background of Urbanization in China

Urban housing problems in China

As a developing country, China is experiencing a process of rapid modernization. However, huge economic progress comes with numerous problems: urban pollution, poor physical environment, and low quality of the living environment.

What can the house do?

Our house is targeted to solve the typical problems in China and tailored to the Chinese market. The house is a component of several independent elements, which can function individually or combine in innovative ways. As a house with a garden, it can 100% save energy by using solar energy, represent the perfect combination of eco-design and architectural design, provide garden space experience. They can be plugged into the old city for urban housing renewal. They can also combine for tourism industry, alleviating the stress of living in the city.

In a word, this flexible, intelligent house conveys the essence of the local design and leads the Chinese green building consulting.

TEAM THFI is a powerful and united team of Tsinghua University from China and Florida International University from the United States.

The Energy Solar Decathlon (SD) is an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered housed that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. SD aims to promote the integration and exchange of the solar energy field and to facilitate the innovation development and in-depth application of solar energy technologies. The competition will assess the team capabilities of energy saving, physical environment controlling and energy self-support. Known as the

Decathlon competition, it is modeled after the Olympics' decathlon competition, evaluating each home based on the performance in 10 contests.
Since the launch of SD in 2002, subsequent competitions have been hosted in U.S. and Europe. Over 100 collegiate teams have participated in these competition. The competition displays the solar energy field's scientific research.

ORGANIZATION

We are a multidisciplinary and international team consisting of students and a faculty advisory board from Tsinghua University (THU), China and Florida International University (FIU), USA. Tsinghua University will be the lead institution. We have formed a diverse international team of students and faculty from Architecture, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering and Environmental Engineering to foster multidisciplinary collaboration and innovation through design studios, workshops, or term projects at both THU and FIU.

The project organization consists of three major components, the student team, the advisory board and Deans. The student team includes a project manager, the project management office (PMO) and four functional groups. The Advisory Board includes faculty members, sponsors and relevant professional engineering and technical personnel.

PRODUCTS MODULAR HOUSE COMMUNITY

The overall layout of the “Re-circle House”reflects the Chinese courtyard organization mode that all of interior spaces are surrounded at a middle space, which we call it “nature core”. From the outermost layer of the building envelope to the core layer, the nature environment permeates into the house from light green to very deep.The nature core is a fuzzy space, which mainly has three functions. Firstly, it can be totally opened as an exterior courtyard during transition seasons or summer night for cooling, but also can be changed into an interior sun space in cold winter toper-heat the house. Secondly, the nature core is a reading area, and inside of the space, we try to express the Chinese sense of “Zen”, which could bring a culture atmosphere of the house to resonate occupants’ feeling. What is more, all of the living area such as living room, dining room and bedroom are designed to face to the nature core to share the nature atmosphere and the landscape view. This fuzzy space can be changed in to two modes, one is to combine with living and dining room to meet more visitor’s needs, the other one is to link to bedroom as a bookshelf. Thirdly, the nature core is a key pint of nature route. The substance building and open nature space are merged at this place, which plays a significant role of the whole house. When the occupants enter into this house, they would find the feeling of venue and vary the scene by the interactive of artificial and nature which also meets to the traditional philosophy of Chinese gardening.

We redefined dwelling. O-house includes production, module, unit, house and community. Modules are assembled free, built fast. With the new energy and zero consumption, every module can feed itself. Thus we improve the human settlement.

Following the modular market strategy, the household furniture also employs the pre-fabricated modular system. Integrated furniture is inserted to the Equipment Basic Module (1100(width) * 7200 (length)). The principle in furniture design is to satisfy the greatest number of living functions in a minimum amount of space. At present, there are two kinds of furniture modules working for bedroom and living room respectively.
The bedroom module is a combination of a bed, which can be either single or double, a wardrobe, a dressing desk, a bookshelf, which can be configured as a bedroom arrangement at nighttime or a dressing room at daytime. The living room module is a combination of television settings and their locker, CD shelves and shelves for gaming equipment that can be configured as a TV-show arrangement, or a gaming arrangement.

The design of modules has four levels, they are household product, component modules, prototype of basic building modules and house system respectively. They explore and extend to the market on each of their level. The prototype of basic building modules includes two kinds of product, which are Equipment Basic Module and Space Expansion Module. The size of both of them conform to China’s high-way transportation requirement. A, B, C, the three component module compose the Equipment Basic Module,the functions of them include solar thermal system , solar PV system, control system of the electric and water system of the house, and integrated indoor furniture, etc. D, E, the two component modules compose the Space Expansion Module. The indoor function space could be custom made for the requirement of the users. Possible living spaces are listed: the bedroom and lavatory module, dining room and kitchen module, living room and storage module etc. Extend the living space by the composition of these two kinds of modules, goods for the aiming market which are independent dwelling house, renew project of mid and high-rise dwelling houses and solar dwelling community are formed. Modules could be assembled freely and quickly, running independently by solar energy system. Modules could be jointed quickly and easily, adaptive to wide range of custom-made for different kinds of marketing requirement.

O-House is integration of sustainability in net-zero house.The specific strategies and steps of integration design, including  building composition mode, architecture and material, combination of building and renewable energy technologies, integration of building and its equipment systems, integrated indoor furniture design, building information framework and so on.

Except fitting in nature with beautiful scenery and combining with tourism industry, O-house also helps a lot in solving urban housing problems, such as residential aging and disorderly illegal construction. O-House can be expand horizontally and vertically by its modular to compose residential community.

Landscape Design

The better way to convey the logo of nature is to make an integration of the landscape and the architecture, we combine the house and landscape for more natural design. The vines grow from the ground to the house, effectively make a change from the two-dimensional into the three-dimensional. It creates the rich transition space to combine the outer landscape and interior rooms.

According to the climatic conditions of Datong and the feeling of users to choose the plants that Datong does not have but adapting to the Datong conditions well. Different plants give the richer outer view and interesting interior environment. The people in the gray space will have a great experience.

The Façade of Plants Selecting

The climate and plant categories of Datong:Datong has a continental, monsoon-influenced steppe climate (Köppen BSk), influenced by the elevation of above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), with rather long, cold, very dry winters, and very warm summers. Its Plant categories belong to grassland vegetation types and the amount is less. Aim to meet our designs need, we choose three kinds of colours to unify all the plants categories we use. Different plants compositions on different facades imply different interior spaces, for different using of interior rooms we choose different colors and breeds.

Market Viability Justification

To address the needs of high-density communities, we have redefined the house. Our house, the O-House begins to address the needs of individuals and families living within these communities with limited space for housing and limited available resources. The O-House is produced locally and consists of tailor-made, self-sustaining modules for individuals and families. The modules conserve energy and water with a goal to produce as much energy is required to run all the systems. The result would be net zero home; energy produced on site equals energy consumed.

Except fit in nature with beautiful scenery and combining with tourism industry, O-house also helps a lot in solving urban housing problems, such as residential aging and disorderly illegal construction.

According the new requirements, we renew the city by insert the basic modules. Our solution can be used in fast building courtyard building. What’s more, it also can be used in recreating the aging high-rise housing. With our modules, we totally change your living quality by renew equipment and new designed compound roof.

The O-House is not a dream but a vision we embrace. It is attainable and it is the future.

With solar photoelectric technology and solar thermal technology, energy is keeping balance. With rainwater recycling and constructed wetlands, water requirement can be self-sufficiency maximization.

The complex patented wall in east, west and north helps keeping warm.

Have more living fun with your variable furniture and adaptable permeable-storage space. The garden and transition space in south are helping keep house’ microclimate.

ENGINEERING

The design of O-House engineering system explores the design of energy efficiency house, the choice of sustainable building technology, and most importantly, the integration of architecture and technology as well as the integration of passive building design and active energy technologies, which is aim to provide livable and comfortable living condition with lest energy and material consumption in its whole life cycle.

 

HVAC System

 

Started with careful analyses of weather data of Beijing and Datong, the designed site and competition site respectively, we try to find the energy effective way of setting up built environment which can take better use of outdoor weather, thus consume less energy in its operation. After that, a comparison of different solar energy utilization ways has been made to decide which is better in heating the house. Then, several simulation tools have been introduced for passive design, including the choice of building insulation (wall insulation, roof insulation, window insulation and so on), variable shading design, electricity generation optimization, natural ventilation and natural lighting etc. Last but not the least, we simulate the total building energy consumption as well as energy generation to confirm O-House is net zero energy consumption in its operation.

Several innovations have been achieved by O-House. To start with, evaporative cooling has been introduced in our cooling system, which is expected to take fully use of the weather condition of low humidity in Datong in Datong to provide cooling for O-House, thus reduce the air conditioning hours as well as air conditioning energy consumption. Besides, in order to guarantee livable indoor environment in sticky weather, when it is hard for evaporative cooling to work well because of the moist air, a new residential air conditioning system has been designed, which integrate heat pump and evaporative cooling. Different from most air conditioning system of residential house, water source heat pump are expected to be used for cooling since compared with air source one, water source heat pump enjoys higher COP (Coefficient of Performance). What’s more, a new solar domestic hot water and heating system has been designed, aimed to provide hot water and heating with one solar collector system. This is a pioneer explore to integrate solar heating and radiation floor in residential heating system. And simultaneously, a two-storage tank system has been introduced to reduce auxiliary heating energy consumption.

 

Electrical Design

 

The core idea of designing the electric part of O-House is to build a micro grid composed by two sub-systems: the smart control system and the energy management system. The smart control system is in charge of controlling home appliances and recording the user’s behavior. The system is characterized by easy-to-use portable device such as iPad or iPhone, and the ability to memorize and “learn about” the user’s habits such as frequently used settings. As for the energy management system, it’s responsible for collecting the status quo of the house’s energy flow and regulating the flow accordingly so as to maximize energy efficiency.

 Meanwhile, we have creatively combined the two sub-systems and devised the interactive control mechanism between them. For example, when solar power generation reaches the lower bound, the energy management system will send alert to the user and make sure the smart control system prepare to shut down some appliances. In this way, the power consumption will be effectively reduced.

 

 

ENERGY PRODUCE

What we always keep in mind is that solar technologies are to provide clean energy, but it should never sacrifice aesthetics or convenience. The inhabitants should not face the complexity of PV system, all they have to do is to live their life, and to be surprised at the energy saving.

There are four stages of PV system design:

A) Generate enough electricity to cover the cost during its life cycles;

B) PV components are in accordance with the architectural design;

C) Reduce the complexity of user operation as much as possible;

D) Make use of the existing system to improve the quality of life so that the PV system provides us more than energy.

 

 

HIERARCHICAL CONTROL

The appliances interconnection equipment is connected to the ibus, so that they can all be controlled more effective and can make life easier.

Considering different control habit, we divide the system into 3 modes:

A) Manual control.

B) Manual control plus panel control.

C) Sensor monitor plus panel control.

 

SMART HOUSE

Except for the automatic control, this house is expected to learn the users habits and make life easier and more energy saving. For example, we can select a mode on the iPad faceplate and then your living customs will be recorded and sent to the cloud. After living in this house for a period of time, the house will know well your bath time, your most comfortable temperature all day and even your adapted illumination.

 

 

 

Plumbing System

 

The design of O-House plumbing system follows the principle of health, sustainability and integration. It explores the design of a water-saving house, safe and healthcare water supply technology, and the integration of architecture and technology, as well as the integration of water treatment technology for wastewater and storm water. The design aims to provide a solution for regional water reuse in the community, and along with showing the effectiveness of the technology in this house, the advantage of regional wastewater treatment will become more significant in community level.

    Inspired by the recent development in wastewater treatment organization, O-House applied membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat grey water from the shower, clothes washer, dish washer and other domestic wastewater, while use quartz filter to treat storm water which is much less polluted. The reclaimed water can be used for irrigation, water feature filling. In this integrated plumbing system, O-House greatly decreased the drinking water usage.
